Turbulent Times For U.S. Fantasy Sports Betting Apps

3/7/2016

Ever since the introduction of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, American punters have been very limited in terms of sports betting on the Internet. Fortunately for them, daily fantasy sports did not fall under these legal restrictions and soon started flourishing.

Operators like FanDuel and DraftKings conquered the market and now have millions of customers in the United States. They managed to keep up with technology and currently offer the only mobile applications that allow US citizens to play real money fantasy sports. Both platforms can be found on the iOS App Store and Google Play. Customers can draft their teams, enters contests and fully manage their accounts on the go.  Mobile fantasy sports bettors can wager on the NBA, NFL, PGA, MLB, European soccer and much more.
Legal Issues

Their success recently drew the attention of some states and it seems FanDuel and DraftKings are now facing tons of legal problems. The likes of New York, Florida, Illinois, Texas, Mississippi, Nevada and Hawaii are all trying to make fantasy sports illegal with various level of success. The operators are being restricted and can’t operate in some of these states and it seems the trend could continue in the future. Legislators are claiming that real money fantasy sports should be treated as gambling and the full consequences of this process remains to be seen in the near future.

Payment Processing

The uncertainty around the legal status of real money daily fantasy apps leads to other major issues for both DraftKings and FanDuel. Vantiv Entertainment Solutions, the main payment processor of both companies, has stopped working with them as of May 2016.

This is a huge blow as the company was handling most of the transactions of both DraftKings and FanDuel. Vantiv declared that the main reason for this measure is the recent action by the US authorities. At this moment, there are no clear indications if the company will return to the industry and this puts the fantasy sports operators in a difficult position.  Many wonder will Apple and Google follow suit and ban their apps from their respective app stores.

One of the ways to go is to implement Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency is anonymous and would allow them to easily process transactions. In fact, this is how some online bookmakers continue to work with US citizens.  However, there are some issues related to transferring to bitcoin payments. Lots of the DraftKings and FanDuel customers are not Bitcoin users and it might send the wrong signal to the players that fantasy sports is actually illegal.

Sports Betting Alternatives

Despite the legal restrictions, some bookmakers still accept players from the USA. The best examples are Bovada and Betonline. Both have earned a solid reputation and are known for providing a viable betting platform to American players. You can find plenty of markets, good promotions and other useful features available.

The two sportsbooks don’t have a dedicated application for iOS and Android, but their sites are mobile responsive. This means they will adjust to your device and you will be able to manage your account and place bets on the go. The full Bovada and Betonline coupons are available on mobile. That includes plenty of markets for both pre-game and live wagering on the most popular sports and leagues in the USA and around the globe.
